Who I work with
I am accustomed to working with a wide range of people from differing backgrounds; those experiencing both common mental health problems but also more complex and long-term difficulties and conditions.
You may be completely new to therapy, or you may have had brief or extended periods of therapy previously. Perhaps you have enjoyed therapy in the past and want to explore in more depth, or maybe you didn’t find your earlier therapy helpful and would like to try a different approach.
Many briefer therapies nowadays focus on behaviour in the present rather than feelings from the past. I work to connect the past to the present and therefore to build an understanding of where our difficulties come from and what we can do to effect real change. This does not mean that we will continually be dredging over painful memories, but it may mean that you begin to see your life in a different light, especially family dynamics, work and other important relationships
The most important requirement for a person beginning therapy is a desire for change and to understand oneself more deeply. This is achieved through an increase in self-awareness and an appreciation of how you relate to other people. Perhaps you could say a prerequisite for effective therapy is to be curious about your world and the difficulties it contains.
